Natural Home Remedies to Heal from Within

Many of us have been feeling under the weather and staying at home lately. You may have been asking yourself if there’s any way to make yourself feel better and recover naturally – without relying on medication that comes with a laundry list of negative side effects? The good news is… that there are plenty!

Zinc

Zinc is a vital mineral that your body needs for countless processes. Because your body doesn’t produce zinc naturally, you must obtain it through food and supplementation. However, that does not mean that zinc is ‘unnatural’. In fact, it is the second most abundant trace mineral found in your body (after iron), and is present in every one of your 37 trillion cells.

Because zinc is necessary for your cells to function, a deficiency can lead to a poor immune response, which means you get sick quicker and stay sick for longer. This can be prevented by eating zinc rich foods such as meat, legumes, seeds and nuts, or taking zinc supplements which can be found at your local pharmacy.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is created within the human body as a response to sun exposure, but it can also be boosted by eating certain foods or supplementation. Despite its name, Vitamin D is not actually a vitamin, as the body is unable to create vitamins itself.

Vitamin D has multiple roles in the body such as promoting healthy bones, regulating insulin levels, supporting lung function and cardiovascular health to name just a few. It is also an important asset in your body’s defence against the flu as it assists in the strengthening of the body’s immune system.

Curcumin

This is a bright yellow powder comes from the rootstalk of the turmeric plant. A recent 2020 study has shown that it acts as an antimicrobial agent, which helps to limit the replication of many different fungi, bacteria and viruses.

Curcumin is available as an herbal supplement, and can be made as a tea for the drinker to benefit from its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It may help to alleviate lung inflammation induced by flu-like infections.

Vitamin C

It’s the first or second thing that comes to mind when we think of orange juice. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps protect your cells from free radicals – unstable molecules that can damage the cells in the body. It is vital for maintaining a healthy immune system and fast tracking your recovery and wellness, but as it is a vitamin, your body does not produce it and so it needs to be taken in through food or supplementation. Foods that are high in Vitamin C include oranges, lemons, peppers, strawberries, broccoli and potatoes.

Emu Spirit for Every Day Life

Emu Oil

Emu oil has been used for thousands of years by the Australian Aborigines as a cure-all medicine. When applied topically the oil has amazing and powerful anti-inflammatory properties which work to treat fever-induced muscle and joint pain. If taken orally, emu oil can act as a natural cough syrup alleviating some of the discomfort associated with an inflamed and sore throat.

Discovering Doggy Dermatisis

emu spirit doggy dermatitis

Humans suffer from a range of skin allergies and dermatitis, but did you know there’s such a thing as “doggy dermatitis”?! That’s right – your furry friend can also experience skin conditions as a result of allergies and it can often get serious if left unchecked. Read on to discover 4 main causes of dermatitis in your canine companion, and how to treat it.

Food Allergies

Yes, even though your dog’s stomach seems indestructible, that doesn’t mean that your dog can’t develop allergies to their food, even the food they’ve eaten their entire life! It is not entirely uncommon for a dog to develop food allergies later on in its life which can cause a painful and itchy dermatological reaction.

If you are unsure why your dog is suddenly developing dermatitis, it may be prudent to introduce a Food Elimination Diet. This is where you introduce your dog to a brand-new single protein source (that they have never eaten before) and monitor for improvement over an 8-week period. You can find many high-quality and complete single protein dog food alternatives at any reputable pet store.

Flea Allergies

Your dog can develop dermatological symptoms from fleas, and it is often the dogs that rarely experience fleas that are the most prone to developing a reaction from the flea’s saliva. Luckily, flea treatment is affordable and abundant, so this issue can be easily overcome.

Staphylococcus Hypersensitivity

This is an inflammatory skin condition which causes your dog’s immune system to overreact to the Staphylococcal pyoderma bacteria on its skin. This can result in a lesion surrounded by dry itchy skin. It is common for your dog to scratch or bite at the rash, which can cause the bacterial infection to spread. Therefore, it is recommended that your dog is placed in an Elizabethan Collar to stop the rash from getting worse. Your vet will most likely prescribe an antibiotic treatment to deal with and bring the infection under control before advising on the next course of action.

Contact Allergies

Dogs aren’t that difference to us, and allergens that can affect humans on contact may even affect your dog. This can include pollen, different types of grass, trees, weeds and dust mites. If you are unable to identify what exactly may be causing a dermatological reaction within your dog’s environment, then you will likely need to see an animal dermatologist for allergy testing.

Managing your dog’s allergies can be a frustrating and complicated task, as it can often be a long process of elimination as you try to find the cause, while also managing and alleviating your dog’s symptoms. The good news is that there are plenty of easy ways to reduce your pet’s general discomfort such as washing the affected area more often with a special PH neutral shampoo, or applying a few drops of Emu Spirit 100% Pure Oil of Emu on the area of contact which can reduce itchiness and assist in the healing process.

Summer Bug Repellents

Summer bug natural repellents Emu Spirit

Summer is here and in full swing, and with the easing of many Covid-19 restrictions we are free to enjoy the outdoors again. However, nothing can dampen your day out quite like the menacing mosquito and its blistering bites.

Thankfully, plenty of products now exist which can spare you from getting bitten, so you to enjoy your time in the sun in itch-free peace. However, not all insect repellents are created equal and it can be hard to decide which is the most effective while also balancing any potential side effects.

Here are some summer bug repellents that you can consider this summer.

DEET

N,N-Diethyl-m-toluamide (commonly known as DEET) is a synthetic insect repellent which was developed by the U.S Army in 1946. It is one of the main ingredients in many commercial insect repellents and works by forming a vapour barrier at the surface of the skin, deterring mosquitos from landing. While DEET has a reputation of being highly effective at keeping the bugs at bay, it has also been known to cause skin irritation, redness and swelling in some cases and even seizures in an extreme minority of people. Therefore, we recommend giving natural repellents a go first.

Lemon Eucalyptus Oil

With an inception also dating back to the 1940s, Lemon Eucalyptus Oil has one of the best reputations as a safe and natural mosquito repellent. Its effectiveness is even acknowledged by the U.S Centre for Disease Control (CDC) with a recent study showing that a mixture of 32 percent lemon eucalyptus oil provides up to 95% protection against mosquitoes for up to 3 hours after application with no real side effects.

Lemon Eucalyptus repellent can be found on the shelf of your local chemist or pharmacy or can even be made at home by creating a mixture of 1 part lemon eucalyptus oil to 10 parts sunflower oil or witch hazel.

Thyme

If you plan to be stationary in one spot, such as at a picnic, BBQ or circling around a campfire, there are ways to keep the insects away without dousing yourself in protective oil repellent. Research has shown that burning thyme leaves on the fire or BBQ creates a scent that the mosquitos can’t stand. Studies have shown that burning thyme leaves offers 85% protection for up to 90 minutes, and while it may not smell good to the bugs, it smells nice to us humans.

Emu Oil

Emu Oil is an effective but lesser-known natural insect repellent. It contains Terpenes which are natural substances that repel insects and has been used by the native Australian peoples for thousands of years. Another benefit of Emu Oil is that if you do get caught out in the swarm, an application of Emu Oil directly onto the skin will reduce bug bite swelling and alleviate any pain and itchiness. It’s one bottle you should definitely keep in your medicine cupboard!

SunSmart with Emu Spirit

SunSmart with Emu Spirit

Summer has finally arrived and if you’re like us, you may be looking particularly ghoulish after a year of lockdowns. We don’t blame you if you can’t wait to work on that tan. However, the Australian sun is no joke, and due to our unique geographical location and clear atmosphere we are exposed to about 15% more UltraViolet radiation than most other countries! This UV can be lead to sunburns, premature wrinkles and even cancer. Luckily, there are a few proactive and reactive measures you can take to reduce your risk of harm this summer so you can enjoy the weather anxiety free.

SunSmart with Emu Spirit

Sun Screen

Sunscreen is the number one most important tool in your summer sun protection arsenal.  It works by blocking and absorbing the sun’s ultraviolet rays from being absorbed into the skin. This greatly reduces the risk of sunburn so you can spend longer in the sun. It also comes in a variety of different Sun Protection Factors (SPF) with an SPF50 rating offering slightly more UV protection than a sunscreen with an SPF30 rating.

SunSmart with Emu Spirit

Sun Glasses

We all know that wearing a hat can help keep the sun off your back on those hot summer days, but many of us forget the damage that UV can do to our eyes. Long term exposure to Ultra Violet Rays can cause serious and irreversible eye damage and vision impairment. Because Ultra Violet Rays are invisible it can be difficult to avoid, so it’s in best practice to wear a pair of quality sunglasses when outdoors during the summer months, or when you are near highly reflective surfaces such as on a beach or when boating.

SunSmart with Emu Spirit

Sleep In

You can literally dream of healthy skin and make it a reality by doing so. While sleeping in won’t stop you from getting sun burnt, studies have shown that your skin does most of its repairs at night while you sleep – which can help reverse sun damage and premature wrinkles caused by UV. So go ahead and squeeze in more zzz’s, you deserve it.

SunSmart with Emu Spirit

Emu Oil

For bonus SunSmart points, Emu Oil is brilliant because it works both as a preventative and reactive sun damage tool. A small amount of Emu Oil can be applied to the skin before your sunscreen or make up, in order to add an extra layer of sun protection. Alternatively, it can be used as an after-sun treatment which can assist in hydrating your skin, relieving sunburn pain and preventing nasty, itchy peeling.

Self-Massage: An Inexpensive Solution

Self-Massage: an inexpensive solution

Massage Therapy is a great way to alleviate tense and sore muscles. However very few people can afford the luxury of visiting a massage therapist every week.

The good news is that in most cases a professional massage isn’t always a necessary first step. Self-massage is a popular method of massage and involves the use of your hands to manipulate your own muscles by applying pressure to certain spots.

When done correctly, self-massage provides the benefits of reducing pain, inflammation and swelling, it can improve immune function, reduce anxiety and assist in the promotion of a more active lifestyle.

All you need is a good quality Emu Oil, ten fingers and a little knowledge on the following techniques.

Self-Massage: an inexpensive solution

Self-Massage for Headaches

Headaches are by far the most common ailment and can be caused by stress or posture. Luckily there is an easy way to alleviate the pain through self-massage.

Simply:

  1. Apply a small amount of Emu oil to your fingers.
  2. Lower your shoulders and straighten your neck and back.
  3. Place the pointer and middle fingers of each hand on the base of the back of your skull, fingertips touching.
  4. Apply gentle pressure and slide your fingers outwards following the point where your neck and skull meet, or downwards towards the base of the neck.
  5. Continue to do this for 5 minutes, focusing on the areas of the neck that feel the most tense and painful.

Self-Massage: an inexpensive solution

Self-Massage for Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is also a common form of muscle pain, mostly due to our modern sedentary lifestyles or more serious workplace or recreational strains and injuries.

Simply:

  1. Sit on the floor, cross your legs and straighten your back.
  2. Apply a small amount of Emu oil to your fingers.
  3. Place your thumbs on the flat triangular bone at the bottom of your spine.
  4. Move your thumbs gently up and down a few inches each way, focusing further attention on areas that feel the most tense and painful.

Self-Massage: an inexpensive solution

Self-Massage for Wrist and Hand Pain

Most jobs involve using your hands repeatedly, whether it be at a computer clicking a mouse or packing boxes, this can take a toll on your muscles.

Simply:

  1. Apply a small amount of Emu Oil to your fingers
  2. Place your thumb from one hand over the wrist of another.
  3. Gently apply a small amount of pressure in a circular motion up and down the wrist.
  4. Next, move your thumb up to the hand to the meaty tissue that connects your thumb to the rest of your fingers.
  5. Gently apply a small amount of pressure in a circular motion.
  6. Apply the above to the other hand and wrist.

Safety

While self-massage is a great way to alleviate pain and stress without breaking the bank, it is important to be in tune with your own body. If you experience acute or major pain, or if self-massage fails to alleviate any pain after a few sessions, you should stop all self-massage immediately and see a medical professional. It is also important to not engage in self-massage if you currently suffer from fractures, burns, bleeding disorders, deep vein thrombosis, severe osteoporosis, severe thrombocytopenia or cancer.

The 3 most common types of Dermatitis to watch out for

The 3 most common types of Dermatitis to watch out for

Dermatitis is a term used by dermatologists to describe a common form of skin irritation. Dermatitis comes in many forms and usually causes itchiness, discomfort, dry skin, redness and a rash. In more severe cases Dermatitis may cause the skin to blister, become painful and flake off.

While Dermatitis isn’t contagious or life threatening, it is important to identify and control the symptoms as it can leave you self-conscious, uncomfortable and in pain.

The three most common types of Dermatitis to look out for are:

The 3 most common types of Dermatitis to watch out for

Seborrheic Dermatitis is a common skin condition that mainly effects areas of your scalp. It can cause itching, scaly red patches and dandruff. On occasion, Seborrheic Dermatitis can affect other areas of your body such as your face, nose, ears, eyelids and eyebrows.

The most common symptoms of Seborrheic Dermatitis are:

– Dandruff – tiny flakes of skin from your scalp, hair, facial hair or eyebrows.
– Redness
– Itchy Skin

While Seborrheic Dermatitis can sometimes disappear on its own, this can be accelerated with proper treatment such as:

– Deeply cleansing your hair and scalp with special shampoos and conditioners
– Massaging Emu oil into the effected areas daily.

The 3 most common types of Dermatitis to watch out for

Atopic Dermatitis, commonly known as Eczema is by far one of the most common and well-known skin conditions. It is more common amongst children but can flare up at any age.

The most common symptoms of Atopic Dermatitis can vary from person to person but the general symptoms include:

– Itchy skin – especially at night
– Dry skin
– Red patches, particularly on the hands, feet and the joints.
– Raised bumps
– Thickened flaky skin

While there is no cure for Atopic Dermatitis, it is still possible to apply treatment in order to prevent sporadic flare ups. This can be done by:

– Moisturizing your skin with emu oil and/or prescription ointments and lotions.
– Avoiding triggers such as excessive sweating, certain soaps and detergents that can cause irritation, dust and pollen
– Identify potential food allergies

The 3 most common types of Dermatitis to watch out for

Contact Dermatitis is a red itchy rash that occurs when direct contact is made between your body and a substance that you are allergic to. Many substances can cause allergic reactions such as certain cosmetics, fragrances from perfume or cleaning products, certain types of metals, or plants and animals.

After contact has been made with an allergen, a Contact Dermatitis symptom can develop within minutes to hours of exposure and can last for multiple weeks. The main types of Contact Dermatitis Symptoms to look out for are:

– Redness and a rash
– Dry itchy skin
– Swelling
– Blisters, sometimes oozing.

If you develop a rash that does not disappear within three weeks, grows over time or is painful, it is important to see a medical professional, otherwise it is possible to prevent or reduce the effects of Contact Dermatitis by:

– Avoiding known allergens
– Wearing protective clothing such as long pants and gloves
– Wash your hands and skin regularly with a hypoallergenic soap
– Apply emu oil gently to the affected area

Why Emu Oil is a Must-Have for Springtime

Why Emu Oil is a Must-Have for Springtime

Spring has finally sprung again (and if you’re unlucky, so have your allergies).

The flowers are blooming, the sun is shining, and it makes us ponder this: Emu oil is a multi-purpose remedy that can be used all year round. But why do so many customers bring their bottle of Emu Spirit out of the medicine cabinet especially in the springtime?

We can think of 4 reasons why your bottle of 100% Pure Oil of Emu is in heavy use this season…

1. Emu Oil provides an extra layer of sun protection

Why Emu Oil is a Must-Have for Springtime

Sunnier spring days means there’s a higher chance you will encounter sun damage to your skin, especially in Australia. Emu oil – when applied underneath a regular sunscreen – can provide you with additional defence from the sun due to its natural sun factor. While it’s not a replacement for sunscreen, emu oil can provide an extra layer of protection for your skin against dehydration from the sun. It’s great for households who are concerned about all the chemicals contained in regular sunscreen formulations.

2. Emu Oil eases itching and discomfort from bug bites

Why Emu Oil is a Must-Have for Springtime

Springtime is when the bugs and insects come out to play. Your family will be exposed wherever and whenever they’re outdoors. Many families rub emu oil on their skin before heading out, as a way to naturally repel mosquitoes and pesky bugs. This is exactly how emu oil was used by natives thousands of years ago. Emu oil is also great for soothing itchy, painful skin from insect bites – we’re sure the kids have had their fair share of emu oil!

3. Emu Oil bolsters your resistance to seasonal pollen and allergies

Why Emu Oil is a Must-Have for Springtime

“Ahh-choo!” That’s the sound of spring, for the allergy-prone amongst us. The transition into warmer weather may trigger seasonal allergies, also called hay fever or allergic rhinitis. If your immune system overreacts to allergens like plant pollen, you’ll begin to experience a lot of sneezing, itching and congestion. For many of our customers, allergies run in the family. They rely on emu oil to give them a natural allergy immunity boost, by just adding a spoonful of pure emu oil to their daily diet. It may help relieve symptoms like the nose-dripping and the eye-watering, so you can just enjoy the sunshine instead of itching your way through the season.

4. Emu Oil helps to reduce Rheumatoid Arthritis flare ups

Why Emu Oil is a Must-Have for Springtime

So many Rheumatoid Arthritis sufferers swear they experience aching joints during a period of changing in weather; forget flowers – a flare up is the symbol for a new season. The most common use of emu oil is to manage the symptoms associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis. The Omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce the level of inflammation, as well as the muscle and joint pain caused by this chronic condition. Many customers use emu oil both topically and internally: they massage the oil directly onto your body, and ingest it by taking a spoonful or adding it to a cold drink such as orange juice. This method manages the painful symptoms from the inside and out (a strategy we most definitely recommend!).

How the Team use Emu Spirit at Home

How the Team use Emu Spirit at Home

Like many Australians, the Emu Spirit team have embraced a work from home schedule this year. We asked four of our team to share how they have used their much-loved Emu Spirit products at home, and how it’s helped them during their new lifestyle adjustments.

Curious about what we’ve gotten up to at home? Read on…

Andrew – CEO

How the Team use Emu Spirit at Home

“I’ve been doing my best to stay consistent with my health habits and keep up a healthy routine at home. In my spare time, I’m usually outdoors working on the garden. It’s been increasingly important to me that I prioritise time for myself, my family and my team. Taking a break and stepping away from the computer has helped me find a healthy work balance. The one thing I’ve been consistent with is taking my Emu Spirit Omega 369 Capsules every single day, as I have been for years. I take 3 capsules a day, and it has made a remarkable difference to my general wellbeing.”

Michael – Production Manager

How the Team use Emu Spirit at Home

“I’ve been keeping busy every day, working hard to meet the demand of our products (ensuring all our orders are going out in a timely fashion to our wonderful customers) whilst also balancing maintaining my health – I’ve actually been making a bigger effort to prioritise my health more than usual. Emu oil has been part of my everyday diet for decades. Recently, I’ve been getting more creative with how I incorporate a spoonful of Pure Oil of Emu into my daily life. I’ve taken a liking to the Overnight Oats recipe! It’s easy, quick and delicious. I prepare it the night before, and enjoy a healthy breakfast every morning. It gives me energy to start the day on a positive note, knowing I’ve done one good thing for my health.”

Debbie – Customer Sales Executive

How the Team use Emu Spirit at Home

“I think I’m adjusting pretty well to the work from home lifestyle. I love being comfortable in my home office and wearing what makes me feel cosy and relaxed while I do my computer work. I admit I don’t have the most ergonomic set up, so lately my arms and hand joints have been feeling more achy than usual. I’ve only used my trusty jar of Emu Spirit Arthritic & Muscular rub for my knees, but I thought I’d give it a go on my elbows and wrists. As I expected, after daily use for about a week, it’s already working wonders on my hands and fingers (and I actually don’t mind the refreshing eucalyptus scent)! The achy feeling has significantly reduced, and I can work at 100% again. I keep my little jar right on my desk as a reminder to apply it at the end of the day.”

Julie – Social Media Manager

“I am one of many who got a #pandemicpuppy and we love him to pieces. He experiences seasonal allergies and recently got a bacterial infection on his paws. When we noticed he kept non-stop licking his paws, we took him to the vet and got some antibiotics which seemed to do the job. Unfortunately, one week later, he started licking his paws again. While we couldn’t easily visit the vet, we decided to try applying pure emu oil directly to his paws every night. Lo and behold – after just two nights of application, he’s stopped licking his paws! I love finding yet another way to use my emu oil. My puppy loves the taste too.”
